Teamie Spotlight: Byron Leboe
Tell us about your personal projects
I have way too many to list. Sadly most stay in the scribble and note stage. I'm always writing and sketching out ideas, it’s what I love. I would really like to do a story about mice. I've had one percolating for a long time. I also have a few princess stories rolling around in the back of my head. And a viking one. And a halloween one...
What sparked the idea for this project?
I just love a good story, and love to make them up. Random ideas always seem to come together and suddenly there is a story to be told!
Can you think of a particular piece of media that inspired you to become an artist?
Bill Peet has been the biggest influence on my career overall. Ever since childhood I’ve loved his work and how he tells a story. His illustrations are amazing. I’ve bought a few of my favourites and read them over again and again. I still sign them out from the library now and then under the pretext that they are for my kids!
What do you most want to improve in your work?
Creating moments, not pictures.
What is your favourite 2-3 colour combination?
Black, grey and white.
Can you think of a particular moment when you realized you wanted to be an animation artist?
I remember well realizing I did not want to be a graphic designer! I was fortunate when, as a teenager, a family friend took me to visit a local graphic design company. I had thought that this was where I wanted to go with my career. When we visited the office and I saw what they actually did, I knew right away that it was not for me. Often realizing you are on the wrong path, helps you find the right one. I am always grateful for that man taking an interest in my career and helping me on my way.
What is the highlight of your career so far?
Everytime I create something that makes someone laugh (because they are supposed to!), that is a highlight. I’ve worked on great shows and with wonderful people, but it's the moments when someone sees my work and it makes them smile that I always remember and love.
What are you trying to improve in your work?
Colour will always be the dog nipping at my heels. Have to conquer that beast, or at least bring it to bay.
What’s your idea of a perfect sunday?
Quiet. Reflective. Spiritual. Afternoon nap.
What is your most memorable non-animation job?
I spent a few summers working as a forest fire fighter and tree planting. Not glorious jobs, but full of ‘moments’.
You’re stuck on a desert island with a laptop and a USB stick containing the entirety of one cartoon - what show is it?
‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’. So good!
